O'Connell Out
Ireland’s worst fears have been confirmed with the news that Paul O’Connell has been ruled out for the remainder of the Rugby World Cup.
O’Connell was stretchered off at half-time in Ireland’s 24-9 win over France last Sunday in Cardiff.
"Paul O'Connell suffered a significant hamstring injury and will undergo surgery this week,” read a statement from the IRFU on Tuesday.
"Paul will not play again at Rugby World Cup 2015 and his time out of the game will depend on the outcome of the surgery.
"Mike McCarthy has been called up to the Ireland squad in place of Paul O'Connell. Mike will arrive in Cardiff on Monday.”
O’Connell had been set to retire after the Rugby World Cup, meaning his injury has brought around an early end to his illustrious career with Ireland after 107 caps, including a further seven for the British and Irish Lions.
