The Costal derby between the Sharks and Stormers got off to a controversial start with Pieter-Steph du Toit's younger brother Johan tackling Sharks' scrumhalf Louis Schreuder in the air straight from the kick off.
Du Toit raced up from the kick off and collided with an airborne Schreuder hitting the Sharks' scrumhalf in his knee with the Sharks' man having to leave the field with the assistance of a golf cart.
Referee AJ Jacobs turned down the advice of his TMO and issued Johan du Toit a yellow card instead of a red card.
The starting scrumhalf failed his head injury assessment which he ultimately failed while Johan du Toit was shown a yellow card for his tackle.
According to World Rugby Law 10.4(i):
Penalty only – Fair challenge with wrong timing - No pulling down
Yellow card – Not a fair challenge, there is no contest and the player is pulled down landing on his back or side
Red card – It’s not a fair challenge with no contest, whilst being a reckless or deliberate foul play action and the player lands in a dangerous position
