Report: Springboks withdraw from Rugby Championship

The World Champion Springboks have withdrawn from the Rugby Championship, according to a report by Liam Napier at the New Zealand Herald.

The report states that the tournament organiser Sanzaar and hosts Rugby Australia are set to confirm that South Africa won't feature in the competition on Friday, which will reduce the competition from a 12 to six-test event and necessitate the need for bye weekends.

This comes after Sanzaar gave South Africa Rugby an additional 48 hours to reach a final verdict on their participation after last-ditch attempts were made for the Boks to arrive in Australia three weeks later than originally planned.

Ultimately, South Africa believe that they have not had sufficient time to physically prepare for the tournament.

Player welfare is the genuine concern for South Africa with their domestic competition, Super Rugby Unlocked, only restarting on October 10.
