Reports suggest that French clubs have agreed to reduce salary caps

A vote on Wednesday will confirm the new salary caps for the TOP14 and PROD2, the top two club competitions in France, according to a report by RugbyRama.

The organising body of French professional rugby, the LNR, will vote on Wednesday to officially lower the current salary cap from €11.3 million to 10 million.

Initial reports suggested that clubs would be able to sign two marquee players that would fall outside of the salary cap but according to the report this proposal has been binned.

On Tuesday, thirty club presidents gathered in Toulouse to confirm the decrease of the salary cap of more than €1 million with the clubs required to meet the new salary cap within the next four years.

The marquee system has been criticised for inflating other player salaries in England which could be one of the main reasonings for abandoning the idea of adopting the system.
