Review: Australia vs Scotland
Many wrote Scotland off coming into this game and few could have anticipated the performance they gave today in the last quarter final against Australia. The Wallabies looked dangerous from the very start scoring 3 first half tries. The Scots kept in touch however with a Peter Horne try and the accurate boot of Greig Laidlaw gave them a 1 point lead at the break.
The sides were neck and neck throughout the second half exchanging penalties and tries from Mitchell and Kuridrani for the Wallabies and a try from Seymour for the Scots. A shock upset looked inevitable when Mark Bennett intercepted a James Slipper pass and scored giving his Scotland a 2 point lead with 7 minutes remaining.
It was the controversial penalty in the 78th minute that broke Scottish hearts as Foley stepped up and slotted it with the coolest of heads. The Aussies would then hold on to win by a point. It was a compelling game of rugby adding to the many classics that we have seen in this world cup. Australia make it a Southern Hemisphere whitewash and will look forward to their semi final clash with Argentina next week.
MOTM. Matt Giteau. An all round dogged performance both in defense in attack. His consistency is undoubtedly something special.
