Rugby legend ‘too ugly’ for best-ever team

One sports unfashionable sideburns and has a rather beaky appearance but captained the British and Irish Lions.

The other is a rugged hunk.

So when Eddie Butler, the BBC’s “voice of rugby”, was asked to compile his greatest-ever Welsh team, he initially plumped for the hirsute John Dawes over the dashing Jamie Roberts in the centre position.

Then the publishers got involved and Dawes, who captained the Lions in 1971, was dropped.

“It is the publishers’ selection in one or two positions,” Butler revealed yesterday at the Hay Festival.

“Because they have better photos.
