Spring wins Champions Try of the Round

Max Spring’s score in the final play of Racing 92’s 41-22 home victory over Sale Sharks last Sunday is the winner of the Champions Try of the Round for the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-finals.

A brilliant offload from flanker Ibrahim Diallo just outside Racing’s 22 created the opportunity, replacement back Virimi Vakatawa continued the move and then produced the perfect pass to release full-back Spring to sprint to the line from around 30 metres for the 79th-minute try.

BT Sport expert Ben Kay commented: “Racing 92 are showing why they are kings of counter-attack. I can’t remember many better offloads than Diallo’s.

“You could see him weighing up all the options and he left it as late as possible but kept control by keeping his fingers on the ball as long as he could.

“Once through, Racing are so clinical and Vakatawa keeps square to hold the defender on him and keep all support players as viable options, then chooses the right one.”
