The Lions beat Leinster in the opening round of the URC

The Lions beat Leinster Rugby 27-26 in a pulsating United Rugby Championship encounter at Ellis Park, with the hosts holding their nerve after Leinster threatened a late smash-and-grab.
Leinster flew out of the blocks through scrum-half Fintan Gunne, who crossed twice inside the opening 13 minutes as the visitors built a 19-17 half-time lead. The Lions hit back through wing Erich Cronje, who touched down either side of Gunne's second try, with Chris Smith among the points both times.
Gunne completed his hat-trick right on the stroke of half-time to edge Leinster in front at the break, but the Lions took control after the restart. Smith's boot proved decisive — a penalty on the hour mark nudged the Lions ahead, and Kelly Mpeku finished off a slick backline move in the 78th minute, converted by Smith, to open up a healthy cushion.
The closing stages turned chaotic: Lions replacement SJ Kotze was sin-binned in the 84th minute, and Leinster punished the extra man almost immediately as Stephen Smyth barged over, with Harry Byrne's conversion cutting the gap to a single point. But there was no time for a final twist, and the Lions held on for a 27-26 victory — their fourth try to Leinster's four, with the boot ultimately making the difference.
