Davies signs new Scarlets deal

Wales scrum-half Gareth Davies has signed a new contract with Scarlets until the end of the 2017-18 season.

The 25-year-old would have been out of contract at the end of this season.

Davies starred for Wales with five tries during their run to the 2015 World Cup quarter-finals after Ospreys' Rhys Webb had been ruled out of the tournament with injury.

"Interest from elsewhere has been flattering but I always wanted to remain here," said Davies.

Davies was the top try-scorer with 10 in the 2013-14 Pro12 season, but a knee injury prevented him from building on that the following season.

Webb's injury gave him the chance to shine at the World Cup and that alerted a number of clubs outside Wales to his potential availability.

"Gareth had a very successful World Cup campaign with Wales scoring some good tries, "said Scarles head coach Wayne Pivac.

"But coming back to the region and having to compete for the number nine shirt with Aled (Thomas) and Rhodri (Williams) keeps the players sharp and ensures that they're always developing."

Tongan Thor signs on with the Reds

Taniela Tupou, affectionately known as the Tongan Thor, has signed a contract extension at the Reds which will see him stay in Queensland until 2018.

At 19 years of age and weighing in at 135kg, this youngster has a long career ahead of him but the exciting things about the front ranker are his speed and skill set.

Tupou said he was excited by the opportunity to continue his development at the Reds.

“I’m very happy to be at the Reds until 2018. I just love this place,” he said.

“When I came here from school I didn’t realise how hard it would be to play Super Rugby, but I’ve learnt a lot in the last year and I know I have to keep working hard to get a chance to play for the Reds.

“I just want to keep learning and hopefully I will get my opportunity to play Super Rugby for the Reds soon.”
