USA one step closer to 2023 World Cup

After a shock loss to Canada last week, the USA consolidated and put Canada to the sword 38-16 yesterday.

USA flanker Hanco Germishuys was immense and scored a hat-trick for his side. The result means that the USA win 59-50 on aggregate and will thus play Uruguay in a home and away series on 2 and 9 October – the resultant winner will earn a place in Pool A at the 2023 World Cup in France.

"We were humbled," said USA captain AJMacGinty of the first game.

"The training sessions (this week) were so much better. We were sharper, we were more competitive in everything we did."

"I think it came down to our individual errors, to be honest" said Canadian captain Lucas Rumball. "It's really disappointing and frustrating.

"If you look across the team, I bet you every individual dropped the ball or made an error. It's tough to win games at the international level when you're doing that."
