Warriors seal knockout place with thrilling victory in Clermont

Glasgow Warriors confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Investec Champions Cup after producing a powerful performance to claim a bonus point win away to Clermont Auvergne.

The visitors dominated the opening half and built a commanding 26 to 7 lead by the interval. Tries from Euan Ferrie Huw Jones Kyle Steyn and Jack Dempsey put Glasgow firmly in control with George Moala providing the only response for the home side before the break.

Clermont came out with renewed intent in the second half and were handed a lifeline when a penalty try was awarded while Glasgow were reduced to thirteen players following two yellow cards. Irae Simone then finished a flowing counter attack to cut the deficit further as the French side sensed momentum swinging their way.

However Glasgow steadied themselves and closed out the contest in style. Steyn crossed for his second try of the afternoon to secure a third bonus point victory from three pool matches and extinguish Clermont hopes of a comeback.

The result leaves the Warriors in a strong position at the top of Pool One. They return to Scotstoun next weekend knowing a win over Saracens would guarantee first place in the group. Clermont now turn their attention to a trip to Durban where they face the Sharks still searching for their first points of the campaign.

Despite missing recent action through injury Huw Jones made an immediate impact on his return. His early break set the tone and his creativity and pace repeatedly unsettled the Clermont defence throughout a dominant first half display from Franco Smith’s side.

Glasgow were forced to dig deep late on as Clermont threw everything at them but the visitors defended resolutely to complete another impressive chapter in what is shaping up to be a memorable Champions Cup run.
