Zebo and his European Dream

Zebo and his European Dream

Racing 92 wing Simon Zebo has admitted he has “always dreamed” of winning the European Cup, ahead of his side’s Heineken Champions Cup Round 3 clash with Leicester Tigers at Paris La Defense Arena on Sunday.

The 28-year-old has an excellent try-scoring record in the competition, notching 24 in 48 matches, with all bar one of them in the colours of his former club, Munster Rugby.

But despite his impressive individual statistics, Zebo is yet to reach a European Cup final, having been on the losing side in four semi-finals, including a 27-22 defeat with Munster against Racing 92.

The French side have started their quest to go one step further in fine fashion, grinding out a 14-13 win over Scarlets in Wales, before sweeping aside Ulster Rugby 44-12 at the Paris La Defense Arena in Pool 4.

Next they take on Leicester in the French capital, with Zebo explaining how excited his side are ahead of their back-to-back matches with the two-time champions.

“It’s been a great start and we are just trying to find that consistency,” said the Irish international. “We are hoping for a big performance and then go on to next week.

“The competition is a huge focal point for us. It’s a competition I have always dreamed of winning and I have always wanted to lift the trophy.

“So, we are all really excited at our chances of going far in the tournament. The lads all have a desire to go on further after last year.”

Zebo highlighted Racing’s dangerous backs, with the likes of wing Teddy Thomas, centre Virimi Vakatawa and scrum-half Maxime Machenaud all potent weapons in the French side’s armoury.

“We have a very dangerous back line and there are players from nine to 15 who can score tries. We all seem to complement each other really well,” he said.
