Johnson shifted south from Auckland in 2015 to mix his studies at the Southern Institute of Technology with a hope he could push his way into the provincial rugby ranks.
He was eventually able to get his shot in the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup for Southland, quickly becoming a key figure in the Stags starting line up.
Despite the disappointing campaign, where Southland lost all 10 games, Johnson was one of the shining lights.
Johnson was selected in the All Blacks Sevens development team and was pulled out after the Blues offered him a full contract for the 2018 Super Rugby campaign.
Ahead of the 2019 Mitre 10 Cup he made the move to Northland
