A strong ball carrier, aggressive around the park and an anchor to the scrum, Kemp first made himself known in the 2010 Varsity Cup for the University of Cape Town. He represented the Western Province amateurs in the same year and was quickly snapped up by Pretoria University (TUKS) and the Bulls in 2011. South Western Districts required his services in 2012 for the Currie Cup 1st Division and it was there that Southern Kings first spotted the tighthead and drafted him into their 2013 Super Rugby squad for his debut season in the competition.
