Schooled at Grey College in Bloemfontein, the prop got noticed early when playing South African U19 in 2004. Starting his provincial career with Free State in the U21 team before progressing onto their Vodacom Cup and senior Currie Cup team in 2007, Roberts then moved to Griquas in 2008 where he has become a stalwart for the province and is regularly included in the Cheetahs Super Rugby squad .
