Harlequins is delighted to confirm the signing of scrum-half Stu Townsend ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Townsend, 29, joins after nearly a decade with Exeter, where he rose through the ranks from the Club’s Academy system to become a key figure in their senior setup.
He made over 120 appearances for the Chiefs, contributing 20 tries and playing a central role in some of the club’s most successful campaigns, including their Premiership triumph in 2017. Plus, their historic Premiership title and European Champions Cup double in 2020.
The dynamic and intelligent scrum half recently featured for the Chiefs against Harlequins in Round 17 of the Gallagher Premiership and scored a second half try.
Townsend spoke of his excitement to join up with his new teammates this summer when pre-season gets underway.
“I’m really excited to be joining Harlequins and starting this next chapter in my career,” said Townsend. “After so many great years at Exeter, the time felt right for a new challenge—somewhere I can push myself, grow as a player, and contribute to something fresh.
“Harlequins is a Club steeped in history – the ambition from within and the environment being built really stood out to me. I can’t wait to get started, meet the lads, and get stuck into pre-season.”
Head Coach, Danny Wilson added: “We’re delighted to bring Stu on board. He’s a proven performer at the highest level and someone who understands what it takes to win. His experience, especially in pressure moments, will be invaluable to our squad.
“Beyond his technical ability and sharp game management, he’s a competitor — tough, smart, and committed. He’ll bring leadership to our group, and we’re excited to see the impact he’ll have both on and off the field this season.”
