Lizo Gqoboka, born on 24 March 1990 in Tabankulu, is a South African rugby player renowned for his powerful presence as a prop. Standing at 1.82 meters tall and weighing 120kg, Gqoboka possesses the physicality and skills necessary to excel in the front row.

Gqoboka's journey in rugby began later than most. Due to his school not participating in rugby, he focused on athletics and soccer. It wasn't until he moved to Durban at the age of 19 and joined Durban Collegians Sports Club that he discovered his passion for rugby and began playing the sport.

In 2012, Gqoboka earned a senior contract with the Eastern Province Kings, a significant milestone in his rugby career. He was included in their 2012 Vodacom Cup squad, providing him with valuable experience and exposure to professional rugby.

Although initially named in the Kings' Super Rugby training squad for the 2013 season, Gqoboka was later released. However, this setback did not deter him from pursuing his rugby dreams.

In 2014, with the Eastern Province Kings promoted to the Currie Cup Premier Division, Gqoboka made his debut in the premier division of the competition. He was selected in their run-on side for the opening match of the season against Western Province, marking a significant step in his career.

Gqoboka's performances did not go unnoticed, and he was included as one of eight uncapped players in the Springbok squad ahead of the June internationals against France. This recognition highlighted his potential and the impact he had made in the domestic rugby scene.

Despite impressing for the Bulls since his debut in 2016 against the Stormers, Gqoboka had yet to earn his test debut for the Springboks. However, his consistent form and powerful displays caught the attention of the national selectors.

In 2019, Gqoboka's impressive performances continued as he accumulated 53 Super Rugby caps for the Bulls, contributing significantly to the team's journey to the semi-finals. His stellar form led to his inclusion in the Springbok Rugby Championship squad, where he aimed to make his long-awaited test debut.

Throughout his rugby career, Gqoboka has represented various teams, including the Springboks, Eastern Province Kings, Montpellier Herault Rugby, and South Africa 'A.' His physicality, strength, and technique make him a valuable asset in the scrum and a reliable contributor to his teams.

As of June 2020, Gqoboka had amassed 59 Super Rugby appearances, further establishing himself as a seasoned and experienced player in the competition. With 20 points to his name, he continues to showcase his abilities on the field and make a significant impact for his respective teams.

Lizo Gqoboka's journey in rugby, starting later than most, serves as an inspiration to aspiring players. His dedication, determination, and unwavering commitment have propelled him to excel at the highest level of the sport, representing his country and leaving an indelible mark on the game.
