Thompson made his Falcons first team debut in 2002, having come through the club's academy. In the summer of 2006 he attended the International Rugby academy of New Zealand, returning in time for the 2006-07 campaign in which he earned his first Saxons recognition. In 2011, Thompson signed a contract extension with the club during a season in which the hooker enjoyed some excellent form. Under Dean Richards Thompson made 28 appearances during the 2012-13 season.
