Quilter Nations Series: England's big winners

England completed their first autumn clean sweep since 2021 with a narrow win over Argentina on Sunday, concluding a series which has seen several PREM Rugby stars seize their opportunities to impress.

Here are some of the standouts who will be looking to take their international form back on to the club scene…

Guy Pepper

Arguably England’s breakthrough player of the autumn.

Pepper made an eye-catching start to his international career in Argentina over the summer and built on that through the autumn, starting all four of England’s victories.

His impact is not always the most headline-grabbing but he is a remarkably consistent, understated performer who has risen from a promising up-and-comer to somebody for the here and now.

His teammates have been suitably impressed too, with Ben Earl calling Pepper’s displays ‘inspirational’ and Nick Isieswe adding: “He has taken to it really quickly. He is one who I have thought ‘wow, he’s got it’. He is playing really well.”

Max Ojomoh

Pepper’s Bath Rugby teammate made the most of his opportunity against Los Pumas.

A late knock to Fraser Dingwall opened the door for Ojomoh and he burst through it with a Player of the Match display featuring a try and two excellent assists, an inch-perfect kick for Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and a deft offload into the hands of Henry Slade.

In doing so, he has put himself firmly in the conversation to line up alongside clubmate Ollie Lawrence in the Six Nations if both are fit – though Dingwall, who shone in the win over the All Blacks, would certainly have something to say about that.

George Ford

Coming into the autumn, perhaps the biggest debate surrounded who would line up with the No.10 on their back.

Borthwick went with experience and George Ford’s assured displays have more than justified that call.

He was at his imperious best against New Zealand, scoring 13 points – including two well-timed drop goals towards the end of the first half – and keeping England on the front foot in a famous victory.

For the time being, at least, Ford appears to be keeping the supremely talented Smiths, Fin and Marcus, at arm’s length.

Alex Coles

His Northampton Saints teammates may attract more column inches but Alex Coles has stamped his authority on this England side over the autumn.

Having come off the bench against Australia, Coles was brought into the starting XV against Fiji and retained his place for the wins over New Zealand and Argentina.

One late yellow card against Los Pumas aside, the Saints star - who penned a new deal earlier this month - was a vital presence. A tackling machine and effective carrier to help his side relieve pressure, Coles looks to have etched his name in alongside skipper Maro Itoje.

Tom Roebuck

England’s strength in the air has been key to their revival and there are fewer stronger exponents of that than Tom Roebuck.

The winger showcased his strength in that area from the outset against Australia, helping put Earl away for the game’s opening try, and added his own name to the scoresheet to finish the job against the All Blacks.

He appears to complement Feyi-Waboso nicely and will hope to build on his impact next spring.

Fin Baxter

Baxter continues to relish going up against the best as he forges an impressive Test career.

The 23-year-old never takes a backward step and is a strong option either from the start or from the bench – he made 14 tackles after coming on as a replacement against Argentina on Sunday.

Baxter was part of strong scrummaging efforts which laid the foundations in wins over the Wallabies and All Blacks and has a bright future in this England set-up.
