Playing both fullback and scrumhalf, Basson made his Currie Cup debut with Western Province in 2003. 2005 saw a move to the Bulls in Pretoria for the Vodacom and Currie Cup rugby but also kick started his sevens career with the BlitzBokke (2005-2007). 2008 saw one season with Boland before heading to Rovigo in Italy where he still plays.
