A confident, ball-playing front-row, Gillies made two appearances for the club in season 2010/11, and was on the bench for the opening games in the 2011/12 RaboDirect PRO12. In March 2010 he made his debut for the Scotland Club International team in their fixture against their Irish counterparts in Dublin before debuting for the Scotland 7s team inthe HSBC Sevens World Series event Hong Kong before traveling with the squad to Adelaide.
