Joe McCarthy, born on March 26, 2001, is a professional rugby union player who currently plays as a lock for Leinster in the United Rugby Championship. Despite being born in the United States, he represents Ireland at the international level due to his Irish ancestry.

McCarthy joined the Leinster Rugby academy for the 2021-22 season, marking the beginning of his professional career. He made his debut for Leinster in Round 11 of the 2021-22 United Rugby Championship against Cardiff.

In June 2022, McCarthy received a call-up to the Ireland squad for the tour of New Zealand, demonstrating his recognition and inclusion at the international level. He made his international debut for Ireland as a substitute, entering the match in the 60th minute during a 13-10 victory over Australia.

Prior to his professional career, McCarthy developed his skills in rugby through the Leinster Academy and also attended Blackrock College as a student. During the 2021-22 season, he impressed while playing for Dublin University in the Energia All-Ireland League.

These experiences and performances contributed to his elevation to the Leinster senior squad, where he was named in the starting lineup for a United Rugby Championship game against Cardiff in January 2022.

Ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, McCarthy has been named in the squad for Ireland.
