Johnny Matthews, born on July 5, 1993, is a rugby union player who represents Scotland 'A' and plays for the Glasgow Warriors. He primarily plays as a hooker.
Matthews joined the Glasgow Warriors ahead of the 2019/20 season under the guidance of coach Dave Rennie. He made a strong impression during his appearances at Scotstoun, which earned him a full-time contract for the 2020/21 season. He continued to impress and secured another contract for the 2021/22 season.
Although born in Liverpool, Matthews qualifies to play for Scotland through his Glaswegian mother. Before joining the Glasgow Warriors, he showcased his skills while playing for Boroughmuir in the Tennent's Premiership. Matthews has a remarkable ability to score tries and topped the Premiership charts with 19 tries in 16 appearances. During the 2016/17 season, he recorded 29 tries in 26 appearances for Sedgley Park.
Matthews scored his first try for the Glasgow Warriors in December 2020, touching down in the 83rd minute of a match against the Dragons at Scotstoun. He made his first start for the Warriors in February 2021, playing as the starting hooker against Ulster at Scotstoun.
In April 2022, Matthews made club history by scoring a hat-trick in a 40-12 home victory over Zebre Parma. This accomplishment made him the first hooker to score three tries in a single game for the club and the first Glasgow player to score a hat-trick since Niko Matawalu achieved the feat in 2018. He repeated this remarkable performance against the same opposition a year later, scoring another hat-trick in a 50-8 win over Zebre Parma in March 2023.
Matthews went on to create further club history by scoring five tries in a single match against the Dragons at Scotstoun, a feat never before accomplished by a Glasgow Warrior.
He has represented Scotland at the under-18 level and has also played for the Scotland Club XV. Matthews was named the McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month for September 2021 due to his impact around the club during the pre-season series and at Scotstoun, as recognized by the coaches.
