Jonathan Ruru

2nd Feb 1993 1.83m/94kg Scrum Half

A quality halfback from Napier Boys High School Jonathan Ruru represented Pirates Rugby Club before he was called into the Hawke's Bay Mitre 10 Cup squad in 2015.

The halfback was fourth in line for Hawke's Bay behind their No1, Brad Weber, rather than wait his turn to add to his one provincial cap, Ruru made contact with Otago and was soon in Dunedin playing club rugby.

Impressive club form and a season-ending knee injury to then first-choice Otago halfback Josh Renton resulted in Ruru soon running out in blue and gold.

The halfback's rise did not stop at provincial level for as he was pulled into the New Zealand sevens jersey at the 2016 Dubai and Cape Town legs of the world series.

In October the Blues signed Ruru on a one-year deal for the 2018 Super Rugby season.

Later that month he was named as one of 10 uncapped players in the Maori All Blacks squad.

He is noted as a fast, strong passing and aggressive halfback and will look to make his mark in his debut Super Rugby season.

Ruru made 13 appearances in his debut season with the Blues and will stay in Auckland and link with Auckland during the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup.

2019 saw Ruru starting regularly in the number 9 jersey, earning himself 26 Blues caps by the end of the season.
