A GIFTED sportswoman in both rugby union and rugby league, Lanulangi ‘Langi’ Veainu joins a growing number of Northland-born players in the Black Ferns squad.

Born in Kawakawa in the far north, Veainu plays on the wing in both codes.

She debuted for the Kiwi Ferns in 2016 and in 2017 she was in the Rugby League World Cup squad that lost to the Jillaroos in the final. In 2019 she played for the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL Women’s Premership.

Rugby runs in the family. Veainu is the sister of former Ikale Tahi Tonga, Crusaders and Highlanders outside back Telusa Veainu, who now plies his trade for Stade Francais in the French Top 14.

The Ardmore-Marist club player made her debut for the Counties Manukau Heat in 2014 and now has 15 tries from her 26 games. In 2020, she combined well with fellow Heat wing Ruby Tui, though it was the latter who had more scoring opportunities.

Veainu scored three tries in two games, including a double against Papua New Guinea, for the 2019 NZ Development XV in Fiji.

She was a replacement for the Probables in November’s Black Ferns trial, showing her power both with and without the ball.
