Up until 2007, Gerrard had played 25 times for Australia, 23 of these Tests.
He was the first Australian player to be signed straight from school on a Super 12 contract, playing once for the Waratahs in 2001 and 2002 , but moved to the Brumbies in 2003, playing in 45 games from 2003 – 2006, scoring 19 tries, and kicking 16 conversions and seven penalties in that time.
His highlight was in 2004, when the Brumbies defeated the Crusaders 47 to 38 at Canberra Stadium, and under coach David Nucifora, who was released despite the Brumbies’ success.
A graduate of Narrabeen Sports High School, he represented Australian Schoolboys in 1999.
Gerrard moved to Japan and spent two years with the Kanto Shining Arcs.
During the coronation of the present King of Tonga, Mark Gerrard played for Tonga during the coronation rugby match in the Teufaiva stadium.
He moved back from Japan to join the Melbourne Rebels for the start of the 2011 Super Rugby season, playing 11 of the Rebels 16 games that year. Later in 2011, Gerrard was named in the 40-man Wallabies squad.
