Disciplinary Decision: Matias Medrano

Disciplinary Decision: Matias Medrano

The Disciplinary process related to Matias Medrano Red Card in the BKT United Rugby Championship Round 5 game against Edinburgh Rugby on Saturday, October 31 has resulted in a one game suspension.

After an act of foul play by Benetton Rugby player No 1 (Matias Medrano), referee Hanru van Rooyen showed the Player a Red Card in the 11th minute of the game under Law 9.16 – A player must not charge or knock down an opponent carrying the ball without attempting to grasp that player.

In the Player’s responses to the Judicial Officer overseeing the disciplinary process (Rose Alice Murphy), he had accepted that he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a Red Card. Ms. Murphy found that the incident met the Red Card threshold, with entry of low-range warranting two weeks. The Player received one week mitigation due to his remorse and apology. The Player does have a previous Red Card which was awarded three years ago in relation to a different offence and in all circumstances Ms. Murphy did not consider the Player to be an offender against the Laws of the game. The Player has been given full mitigation (50%).
