Stuart Lancaster has often been accused of running a zero tolerance regime: Danny Care, exiled for drink-driving offences; Manu Tuilagi for his conviction for assault.
And now Dylan Hartley, cast into the World Cup wilderness.
Lancaster's seeming lack of sympathy for miscreants is, however, a distortion.
These were all the right decisions, the correct calls.
Let us not pretend that Lancaster has used a sledgehammer to crack a nut, or that he has taken any pleasure in donning the Hanging Judge's black cap.
