Pro D2: Provence dominate, Montauban rally as Brive’s slump deepens
- 102
Provence Rugby continued their perfect start to the season with a dominant victory over Béziers, while Montauban produced the comeback of the round to end Oyonnax’s winning run. Brive’s early-season momentum has stalled, but Agen are moving in the opposite direction after securing a third consecutive victory.
Round 8 of the Pro D2 season delivered a significant shift in momentum. Provence Rugby remain the division’s only unbeaten side after eight matches, Montauban demonstrated their resilience against the league leaders, and Agen continued their climb following a difficult start. Meanwhile, Brive’s recent struggles are beginning to raise questions after a third successive defeat.
Provence Rugby make it eight from eight
Provence Rugby continue to set the standard in the Pro D2, extending their unbeaten start to eight matches with a commanding 54–3 victory over Béziers.
The result was Provence’s eighth consecutive league win, taking them to 34 points and level with Oyonnax at the top of the table. However, Provence sit second on points difference, despite being the only side yet to suffer defeat this season.
The performance was emphatic. Provence crossed for eight tries, with Lenoir and Latterrade both scoring twice, as Béziers struggled to contain the hosts. The visitors’ task became even more difficult when Dufour received a red card in the 53rd minute.
The result also puts Provence alongside Pau’s achievement from the 2014–15 campaign, when the Béarnais began their Pro D2 season with eight consecutive victories. Provence have now matched that benchmark and will look to extend their run when they travel to Dax in the next round.
With a healthy points difference of +115 after eight matches, Provence are not merely collecting victories; they are doing so with authority. Their challenge now is to maintain that consistency as the season progresses and the pressure at the top of the table intensifies.

Montauban overturn Oyonnax in second-half comeback
While Provence were celebrating another victory, Oyonnax suffered their first defeat of the campaign after Montauban fought back from 20–7 down at half-time to win 24–23.
Oyonnax appeared to be in control after a strong opening 40 minutes, taking a 13-point advantage into the break. But Montauban returned with renewed intensity, turning the contest around in a remarkable second-half response.
The hosts scored two converted tries within two minutes of the restart, immediately changing the momentum and putting the previously unbeaten visitors under pressure. Enzo Hervé played a decisive role in the comeback, scoring a try, adding three conversions and kicking a penalty.
Montauban eventually held on for a narrow one-point victory, ending Oyonnax’s seven-match winning streak and demonstrating that the leaders could be beaten.
Despite the defeat, Oyonnax remain top of the standings on points difference, level with Provence on 34 points. Montauban, meanwhile, move to 21 points after recording their fifth win of the season.
The victory could prove important for Montauban’s campaign, particularly given the character required to recover from a substantial half-time deficit against one of the division’s strongest sides. For Oyonnax, the result serves as an early reminder that their position at the summit will not be secured without a fight.

Brive’s worrying slide continues
Brive’s impressive start to the season is becoming a distant memory, with a 34–26 defeat away to Narbonne marking their third consecutive loss.
After winning their opening five matches, Brive appeared to be establishing themselves among the leading contenders. Their recent form, however, has raised concerns, with defeats to Montauban, Provence Rugby and now Narbonne halting their early momentum.
The latest setback was particularly frustrating given the circumstances. Narbonne scored five tries despite enduring a chaotic disciplinary battle that included an orange card for Abraham Pole in the seventh minute and three yellow cards after half-time. At one stage, the hosts were reduced to 12 players against Brive’s 15.
Despite that numerical advantage, Brive were unable to capitalise, as Narbonne secured a valuable victory in front of their home supporters.
Brive remain fifth with 21 points, but their position is becoming less comfortable. Montauban and Aurillac are also on 21 points, while several other sides are beginning to close the gap.
The contrast with their opening five rounds is stark. Brive have gone from looking like genuine challengers at the top to a side searching for answers. Their next performances will be crucial in determining whether this is a temporary dip or the beginning of a more concerning trend.
Agen find momentum with third straight win
Agen are beginning to build some consistency of their own after claiming a third consecutive victory, edging Nice 28–24 in a tense encounter.
The result was far from straightforward. Nice pushed Agen throughout the match, but the hosts eventually secured the win through Ange Soulan’s decisive try in the 79th minute. Soulan finished with 13 points, playing a key role in a result that could provide a valuable boost to Agen’s campaign.
The victory follows two previous wins and moves Agen to 19 points after eight rounds. They currently sit ninth, within reach of the teams occupying the upper half of the table.
Agen’s recent run is particularly encouraging given how competitive the Pro D2 standings remain. With only a handful of points separating several clubs around the middle of the table, consecutive victories can quickly transform a team’s position.
There is still work to do if Agen are to establish themselves as genuine play-off contenders, but their latest results suggest they are moving in the right direction. The challenge now is to turn this winning run into sustained form rather than another short-lived spell of progress.

The bigger picture
After eight rounds, Provence Rugby are the division’s only unbeaten team, while Oyonnax remain level with them on points despite suffering their first defeat. Montauban have shown their ability to compete with the leading sides, and Agen are building momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Brive, by contrast, must arrest their slide before the gap to the top four grows further.
With Provence travelling to Dax and Oyonnax preparing to host Soyaux-Angoulême in the next round, the race at the summit is finely poised. Eight matches into the season, the standings are already revealing contrasting stories of consistency, resilience and declining momentum — and the next round offers another opportunity for those trends to continue or change.
