Former England 7's Star Joins NFL Franchise Atlanta Falcons

Former England 7's player Alex Gray has switched codes to become the first English rugby union professional to sign for an NFL franchise.

Gray was an England 7's Player of the Year in 2015 and made over 40 Premiership appearances for London Irish, as well as spending time at Newcastle and Yorkshire Carnegie.

He also captained Owen Farrell, George Ford and Jonathan Joseph to the U20 Grand Slam and JWC final in 2011, but has quit rugby after being offered a place on the NFL's International Player Pathway programme.

He impressed during initial trials in Florida, the 26-year old has been offered a contract as a tight end by the Falcons, where his large frame will be used to protect his quarterback & his handling abilities to be tested as a receiver.

Gray will be a member of the practice squad, which an aim to be given a place on the franchise's full roster from next season.

'' I have been working hard for his goal and to be told it was going to happen was an amazing moment,'' said Gray. 

'' This is the start of another fantastic journey. It is a fantastic thing that is happening, but I am not going to get to where I want to be without keeping myself grounded.
