France Player Ratings v Wales

France Player Ratings v Wales

France were downed 20-19 by Wales in the third Rugby World Cup quarter-final. Wales made France pay the ultimate price for Vahaamahina's red card.

Here is how we rated the French:

1. Jefferson Poirot - 7

Powerful in the scrum and superb around the park for just under 70 minutes. He made his tackles, all 9 of them, and made 8 carries.

2. Guilhem Guirado - 6.5

Excellent for 49 minutes. Sharp and accurate at the set pieces, busy around the park and was oddly taken off earlier than expected.

3. Rabah Slimani - 6

Solid as a rock while France had 15 men on the pitch and did responsibly well to continue in that vein when they were one less in the pack. Relatively quiet around the park.

4. Bernard Le Roux - 6

Threw everything he had at Wales. Picked up the slack once Vahaamahina was sent off and left the field injured in the 65th minute.

5. Sebastien Vahaamahina - 1

A strong first half saw Vahaamahina grab his first try but he followed that up with a ludicrous decision to elbow Aaron Wainwright in the face. A decision that cost France a semi-final.

6. Wenceslas Lauret - 4

Did a lot of the grunt work for France but didn't get stuck in on defence enough.

7. Charles Ollivon - 8

Excellent first half from the Frenchman and took that form into the second. One of France's best. Ran excellent lines and smashed Wales' attackers back on defence.

8. Gregory Alldritt - 6

Solid outing from the young Frenchman, carried well, got stuck into the rucks and was overall strong.

9. Antoine Dupont - 7

Got his side in great positions and seemed to pick the right pass, run the right line and kicked well. He was less impactful once France were down a man but still a good game from the live wire halfback.

10. Romain Ntamack - 6

An excellent first half from the youngster but he was unable to continue in the second.

11. Yoann Huget - 6

Put in a few good shots, worked hard on the kick chase but saw little ball on attack.

12. Gael Fickou - 7.5

Looked dangerous every time he touched the ball, racked up 72 running metres beat 3 defenders and defended responably well.

13. Virimi Vakatawa - 8

Possibly the man of the match had France came out on top. Carried superbly and offload even better. A menace when he touched the ball and was a nightmare for Wales' defence.

He also made all of his tackles and won a turnover. His carries from the set pieces were crucial for France.

14. Damian Penaud - 7

Looked to tear Wales apart with every touch of the ball. Racked up 42 running metres, picked up a try assist and showed off his full box of tricks with some nice steps and offloads.

15. Maxime Medard - 7

Anchored the backline well from the back and covered the backfield well. Kicked superbly and made 100 running metres.
