Gareth Anscombe warns pay could lead to Welsh player exodus

Wales' Grand Slam winning flyhalf Gareth Anscombe has sent out a warning to Welsh Rugby chiefs following the Six Nations stating ' We're a world-class team and players deserve to be looked after'.

The 27-year-old who was named man of the match in the victory over Ireland insisted that the players had been let down by those running Welsh Rugby.

Anscombe has been linked with a move to the Premiership with his current contract with the Cardiff Blues expiring at the end of the season. A move away from Wales would see Anscombe become ineligible to represent Wales as he does not meet the 60-test cap criteria.

“We all want to play for Wales, there is no doubt about that, but players need to be treated well and we deserve to be,” said Anscombe.

“We’re a world class team. We are doing a hell of a lot for the country, so we should be looked after.

“I think we’ve given the Welsh Rugby Union something to be pretty proud about and hopefully the Union and the regions can come together and sort out the best deals for the players because that’s important.

“At times when they try and pigeon hole you into something it’s a little bit frustrating.

“I’d love to keep playing for Wales, but we’ve got to work out a few things for sure.”

When asked if the situation has made him consider seeking employment in England, he said: “I think it has made all the boys think about that to be honest.

“We’ve only got a 10-year window to really look after ourselves and I guess the important thing is you don’t want to look back with any regrets.”

Anscombe and Wales captain Alun-Wyn Jones are two high profile players that are yet to sign new deals in Wales while the Cardiff Blues did secure the signature of Josh Adams. Scarlets tied down the likes of Ken Owens, Jonathan Davies and Rob Evans.

Many of Wales’ top stars claimed Grand Slam glory not knowing where their futures lay.

“It’s not ideal the scenario we’ve got with what’s going on behind the scenes and I think the players have been let down a fair bit,” said Anscombe.

“Certainly when you think about the results we’ve provided them.

“We need to make sure we’re looked after well and the fact this is going on is pretty frustrating and disappointing.”
