The Hurricanes are pleased to announce that Harry Godfrey has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.
Already signed until the end of next season, Godfrey’s extension will keep him at the Hurricanes until 2028. The 23-year-old is eager to return to action with the Hurricanes after overcoming a major knee injury that sidelined him for this year’s title-winning Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
“I’m really grateful to extend with the Hurricanes and for the opportunity to continue to develop my game here,” Godfrey said.
“The club has had a great year, and I’m looking forward to building on that success. I really like the direction the club is heading and I’m excited to contribute by adding to that success over the next few years.”
Born in Hunterville and schooled at Whanganui Collegiate, Godfrey is a product of the Hurricanes region, having come through the club’s development pathway and playing for the Hurricanes U18 and U20 sides.
Between 2020 and 2023, he was also selected in the New Zealand Schools and New Zealand U20 squads. A 2022 Oceania Rugby U20 Championship winner, Godfrey was later named New Zealand Rugby Age Grade Player of the Year in 2023.
In 2021, Godfrey earned a provincial debut with Hawke’s Bay as an 18-year-old. He has gone on to make 35 appearances and score 237 points for the Magpies and was part of the Hawke’s Bay squad that claimed the Ranfurly Shield three years ago.
He made his Super Rugby Pacific debut with the Hurricanes in the opening match of the 2023 campaign and has since played 16 times and accumulated 60 points.
An exciting and promising playmaker who is equally adept at first-five and fullback, Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw is excited to see Godfrey back in black-and-yellow after two injury-curtailed seasons.
"Harry’s done an amazing job to recover from his ACL injury. He actually had a club game just before we finished our season, and I think everyone saw that he started the NPC really well,” Laidlaw said.
“He started the 2025 season so well for us and then picked up an injury that year, and then an ACL this year, so hopefully his body can play ball, and we can continue to grow his game.
“He’s worked hard on his tactical game and understanding of the game while he was injured. He’s watched a lot of footage and has been actively curious about different competitions around the world.
“We feel he’s one of the brightest talents we’ve got here. We look forward to continuing that development and we are excited to add him to our longer-term group for the next few years.”
