Wales held on for a thrilling 29-25 win over Australia in a Pool D Rugby World Cup clash. Wales started strongly, slotting a drop goal in the opening minute and running in the first try to lead 10-0. Australia hit back with their first try midway through the half and added a penalty to trail just 10-8. However, Wales would finish the first half superbly, slotting two penalties before crossing for a try just before the break to take a commanding 23-8 advantage into halftime. Wales started the second half as they did the first, with an early drop goal extending their lead to 26-8. Momentum swung in the Wallabies favour as they began to dominate both territory and possession and it paid off with two tries as Australia came storming back into the match, trailing just 26-22. An Australian penalty saw the gap cut to just a single point with a little over ten minutes remaining. A Welsh penalty made it four point ball game with 8 minutes left on the clock. Australia threw everything they had at the opposition, but Wales held out for a narrow victory which sees them take control in the race to top Pool D.
