Pieter-Steph du Toit parts ways with Verblitz

The two-time World Rugby Player of the Year will return to South Africa after mutually agreeing to an early release from his contract with the Japanese club, with family commitments behind the decision.

Toyota Verblitz have confirmed that Springbok forward Pieter-Steph du Toit will leave the club after five seasons following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract early.

Although Du Toit was still under contract, discussions between the player and the club resulted in an agreement to grant him an early release ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The 34-year-old explained that his decision was largely motivated by the desire to spend more time with his family rather than continue travelling between Japan and South Africa.

"Toyota Verblitz and the people of Japan have been incredibly kind and welcoming to our family," Du Toit said.

"I would like to sincerely thank the club's management for enabling our family to stay together during our time in Japan.

"I shared with the management that I did not want to be separated from my family and travel back and forth between Japan and South Africa during the upcoming season. They were understanding of my situation and kindly agreed to an early release from my contract."

The Springbok also expressed his gratitude to everyone associated with the club, acknowledging the support he and his family received throughout their time in Japan.

"To all the staff at Toyota Verblitz, thank you for everything you have done for my family and me. Your kindness and support have meant a great deal to us.

"To my teammates, thank you for the friendships, memories and experiences we have shared. It has been a privilege to be part of this group."

Du Toit also reserved special appreciation for the club's supporters, thanking them for standing by the team and himself through both successful and challenging periods.

"To all the fans, thank you for your continued support, whether the team or I were performing well or going through difficult times. Your unwavering encouragement and warmth have always meant so much to me."

Toyota Verblitz general manager Akitomo Goto paid tribute to the South African international, highlighting the influence he had on the club throughout his five-season spell.

"Throughout his time with Toyota Verblitz, Pieter consistently delivered outstanding performances as one of the world's finest rugby players.

"He also set exceptionally high standards in his daily training and match preparation, making a significant impact both on and off the field."

Goto added that Du Toit's professionalism, leadership and commitment had made him an inspiration to those around him, while acknowledging his contribution to the team's development.

"We are extremely proud to have had Pieter represent Toyota Verblitz and sincerely thank him for his outstanding contribution to the club. We have the utmost respect for everything Pieter has achieved during his time with us, and everyone at Toyota Verblitz wishes him every success in the next chapter of his career."

Du Toit's departure brings an end to a five-season spell in Japan, with the experienced forward now set to return to South Africa and focus on the next chapter of his career.
