That's all the reason Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer needed to delay a call on his fitness for tomorrow's Rugby Championship finale in Johannesburg.
Vermeulen will be given until the morning of the Ellis Park Test to prove his rib cartilage injury has healed enough to play.
The bruising No 8 pulled through today's captains run - his first training run of the week - unscathed, leaving the All Blacks guessing whether he or veteran Schalk Burger will pack down at the back of the Springbok scrum.
