Super Rugby got underway with an all New Zealand derby with the Chiefs coming out on top 37-29 away against the Blues. Two tries saw the Blues build a 12-0 lead, but the Chiefs hit back with their first score to trail by seven. The Blues would have the final say of the first half, crossing for their third try to take a handy 19-5 advantage into the break. The Chiefs came out firing in the second half and two quick tries in the opening ten minutes saw the hosts 14 point buffer erased, all square at 19-19. The Blues responded with their fourth try to again lead, 26-19 heading into the final quarter. But the Chiefs came storming back with two quick tries and added a drop goal with around 5 minutes remaining to take control of the match at 34-26. The Blues made it a one score ball game with a penalty with two minutes remaining to give themselves a chance, but the Chiefs would finish it with a penalty with the final play to deny the Blues a losing bonus point.
