An early second-half penalty for the Waratahs was followed up by a try as the visitors hit the front for the first time in the match, 23-19 heading into the final quarter.

The Reds however regained the lead with their fourth try, but they then picked up a yellow card shortly after, with the Waratahs kicking the resulting penalty to level things up 26-26 with a little over ten minutes remaining. With the game heading for possible extra time, the Reds edged ahead with a penalty with just four minutes to play. The match was then put to bed with another penalty for the Reds in the final minute sealing the victory for the home side.
