Tony Smail announced as new Canterbury Rugby Football Union CEO

The Canterbury Rugby Football Union has announced today that Tony Smail has been appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer.

Smail, who has been acting CEO for the past 3 months, was confirmed by the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) board on Monday night.


CRFU Board Chairman, Peter Winchester, was thrilled with the appointment of Smail who will now lead the 139 year old Union.

“Tony has been the Chief Financial Officer at Canterbury Rugby for six years and he has been a proven leader over this time. As acting CEO over the past three months I have seen Tony’s vision and leadership qualities first hand, and alongside the CRFU Board, we know he is the right person to take Canterbury Rugby into the future”.

Smail joined the Canterbury Rugby Football Union in 2012 as CFO and has been responsible for running the finance, ticketing and international high performance unit teams for both the CRFU and Crusaders over this time. He joined the CRFU following financial roles in the commercial sector.
