Two game ban & fine for Marler

Two game ban & fine for Marler

England prop Joe Marler has been found guilty of violating Regulation 20 and the code of conduct by World Rugby, for comments made towards Samson Lee during the England versus Wales 6 Nations match at Twickenham on 12 March. The panel noted that Marler was “proactive” in apologising to Lee during half-time.

Regulation 20 and the code of conduct both cover statements that are unsporting and/or insulting and/or discriminatory by reason of race or ethnic origin, which bring or have the potential to bring the game into disrepute.

Marler admitted to the charge in its entirety and has been handed a two-match ban and fined £20,000 to be paid to a suitable equality charity in the UK.

The prop will miss Harlequin’s next two matches against London Irish in the European Challenge Cup quarter-final on Saturday and against Saracens in the Premiership.

“We acknowledge the outcome of today’s hearing,” said an RFU spokesman late on Tuesday night. “The decision will not be appealed and we now consider the matter closed.”
