A former Scotland 7s Player of the season for 2006-07, Adamson's playing career includes helping Glasgow Hawks to National Cup victory in 2007.

He then secured a full-time contract with the Glasgow Warriors, making his only competitive appearance in the Celtic League in January 2008 against Newport Gwent Dragons.

Following limited game time, he moved on to play for London Scottish but only made 1 competitive appearance for the exile side.

Adamson worked his way up the refereeing ladder following his retirement from the game, officiating in the Anglo-Welsh Cup in England, the Currie Cup in South Africa as well as PRO D2 in France.

His rapid rise as a referee saw him get appointed to the Refereeing Panel for the Olympic Games Rugby Sevens for Rio 2016.

In May 2019, he became the first Scottish referee to officiate a European knock-out game since 2010 when he took charge of the PRO14 semi-final between Leinster and Munster.

Adamson was also selected to referee the 2019 Rugby World Cup warm-up games between Japan v Fiji, Ireland v Italy and Canada v USA.
