The centre began his career with Lions where he made his Super Rugby debut in 2002. Representing the South African Sevens team between provincial duties, Coetzee then moved to the Bulls for Super Rugby in 2006. Rudi signed with Bourgoin for the 2006/2007 season and spent five years with the club. A one year stint with Perpignan in the 2011/2012 then saw the back linking up with Grenoble in 2012.
