He attended Shirley Boys' High, the same school as All Black and Canterbury stalwart Chris Jack, and is currently studying towards a degree in sports coaching at Canterbury University.

The 2006 New Zealand Schools representative entered the national selection frame on the strength of outstanding performances for Canterbury Under 18 and at the New Zealand Under 19 trial camps.

A natural leader, Crotty earned his first start for the Crusaders in 2009 against the Western Force and scored his first Super Rugby try early in that match. Crotty was selected for the Junior All Blacks in 2009.

He was also a member of the successful New Zealand Under-20 team at the Junior World Championship in Wales in 2011 and captained the team against Ireland.

Ryan’s father, Steve also played first class rugby while his mother represented NZ in water polo. He was included in the 2015 Rugby Championship Squad but missed out on the RWC team that year.

His fine form in the 2016 Investec Super Rugby earned him a call up to the first All Blacks squad of 2016 to take on Wales during the June Internationals.

Crotty, who has captained Crusaders when Kieran Read has missed games has made 107 Super Rugby appearances, and made his test debut off the bench against Australia in 2013.

He has started 15 games for the All Blacks, with 11 appearances off the bench, scoring five tries. His most recent Test outing came in the 24-19 win over France in Paris in November.

Crotty has made 107 appearances for the Crusaders in Super Rugby scoring 20 tries. He has made 12 appearances in the 2017 Super Rugby season and was been included in Steve Hansen's squad for the NZ Lions series.

In July 2017, Crotty signed on with the All Blacks, Crusaders and Canterbury Rugby for another year. Crotty became a Super Rugby champion as the Crusaders secured the 2017 title against the Lions in August 2017.

Crotty has been included in Steve Hansen's squad for The Rugby Championship 2017 with 27 caps under his belt. He will form a formidable partnership with SBW in midfield.
