A flanker with a habit of popping up with tries. The Ul Bohemians man has scored six tries in just under 50 games for Munster. O’Donnell debuted for Munster in September 2007. O’Donnell has various Ireland underage caps and was part of Eric Elwood’s Ireland Under 20 Grand Slam winning team of 2007.

O'Donnell signed a two-year IRFU contract extension in November 2013 that will keep him at Munster until at least 2016. He was named in the Ireland squad for the 2014 Six Nations and made his Six Nations debut as a substitute in the opener against Scotland.

He came off the bench again a week later against Wales with Ireland going on to win the Six Nations in Paris. In what continued to be a successful year for O'Donnell, he featured in Ireland's victories over South Africa and Georgia during November's Guinness Series and made his first 6 Nations start against Italy in February, scoring his first try in the tournament.

O'Donnell also featured against England and was part of the travelling squad that claimed the 6 Nations trophy at Murrayfield. He had the honour of being selected on the 2014/15 Guinness PRO12 Dream Team and received a nomination for the 2015 Munster Player of the Year. The impressive has 8 caps to his name at the time of writing.

Sustained a hip dislocation in Ireland's World Cup warm up game against Wales in August, an injury that would see him miss the RWC 2015.

Made a return to action ahead of schedule against Leinster at Thomond Park in December and excellent form saw him selected for the 2016 Six Nations where he featured against Wales, France and Scotland.

Signed a new deal in December 2016 that will see him remain with the province until at least June 2019.

In May 2017, O' Donnell was named in the Ireland squad for the summer tour of USA & Japan, having won 12 caps for his country. O' Donnell was ruled out of the summer tour through injury and was replaced by Sean Reidy.

Ahead of the 2018/19 season, O'Donnell has represented Munster on 155 occasions scoring 80 points.

As of the 2018/2019 Champions Cup, O'Donnell has had 29 European Cup appearances scoring 1 try and 5 points.

In October 2018, he signed a two-year contract extension with Munster until June 2021.
