Preston has enjoyed a rapid rise to the international stage after breaking into professional rugby in 2023. Preston came through the ranks at Tawa College before starring for Old Boys University in club rugby 2020. He made his NPC debut for Wellington in 2023 and played a key role in the province's 2024 championship-winning campaign.
In November 2024 Preston was named in the Crusaders squad for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, after having already trained with the squad earlier in the year as injury cover. He went on to make his debut for the Crusaders against the Hurricanes where he scored three tries.
His impressive performances earned him an All Blacks call-up later that year, making his Test debut during the Rugby Championship. In 2026, he remained part of the All Blacks squad for the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry tour of South Africa, providing strong competition for the scrum-half jersey alongside Cameron Roigard and Cortez Ratima.
