Maceala Samboya

30th Jul 1999 1.58m/60kg Right Wing

Samboya started playing rugby in 2023 and incredibly make her debut the
same year, scoring a try on debut against Samoa in front of her Sanlam
Boland Dames home crowd. Things could not have started better for the
former Schoonspruit Secondary netball player, but injuries did play a role
in the fact that the Malmesbury native only played in four test matches yet.
Samboya was spotted playing touch rugby and then invited to try out sevens
rugby. The rest, as they say, is history. Her sevens performances resulted
in a call-up to the Dames provincial side where she played a double round
of fixtures against the country’s best players. She was drafted into the setup and the debut (and try) came in a blink, as did the run-on out the wing
against Scotland in the newly established WXV 2 tournament. She added
Rugby Africa Women’s Cup experience in 2024, had her first overseas start
against Spain and in 2025 scored a majestic try against the England U23s
while on tour in Marcoussis. In her spare time, Samboya is a community
worker in Malmesbury and started a women’s rugby team as well.
