California Legion has signed experienced center Billy Meakes ahead of the 2026 Major League Rugby season, adding one of the league’s most accomplished midfielders to the roster.
Meakes arrives in California with a deep MLR resume and a proven track record of production. Since entering the league in 2021, he has been one of its most consistent and influential centers, earning multiple All-MLR selections and Back of the Year honors during his time in Los Angeles, Chicago, and most recently Rugby FC LA.
The Australian center first made his mark with LA Giltinis, where he helped lead the club to an MLR Championship in 2021. That season set the tone for his career in the league, as Meakes quickly established himself as a physical ball carrier with elite work rate, defensive reliability, and strong leadership presence in the midfield.
Following the Giltinis era, Meakes joined the Chicago Hounds, where he played a central role during the club’s inaugural seasons. He captained the side, led from the front in key moments, and helped guide Chicago to its first playoff appearance. In 2024, he finished eighth in the league for meters gained while completing 135 tackles, highlighting his impact on both sides of the ball.
In 2025, Meakes returned to Los Angeles with Rugby FC LA and delivered another standout campaign. He earned five Team of the Week selections, helped the club reach its first postseason, and was named RFC LA Back of the Year. His performances also secured him another All-MLR First XV selection, his fifth All-MLR honor overall.
Across his MLR career, Meakes has earned over 70 caps, scored 13 tries, and recorded more than 5,300 meters gained. He brings size, experience, and consistency to the Legion midfield as the club continues building toward the 2026 season.
