A product of St Patrick's College, Wellington, Lauaki earned New Zealand Schools honours and was named College Sport Wellington Sportsman of the Year.
Lauaki made his provincial debut for Wellington in 2022 before representing New Zealand Under 20 at the 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship. His performances earned him a Hurricanes contract for the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.
After impressing with the All Blacks XV, Lauaki received his first senior All Blacks call up in 2026 for the tour of South Africa.
