IRFU probes racist abuse aimed at Edogbo after debut

The Irish Rugby Football Union is investigating “cowardly” racist abuse directed at Edwin Edogbo following his international debut in the Six Nations Championship.

Edogbo, born to Nigerian parents, earned his first cap off the bench during Ireland’s 20–13 victory over Italy in Dublin on Saturday. He replaced James Ryan for the final 10 minutes of the match.

According to the Press Association, social media posts celebrating Edogbo’s debut were met with targeted racist abuse. The IRFU confirmed on Monday that investigations are underway.

In a statement, the union said it will “continue to fully support all affected by the cowardly actions of a minority.”

“It is clear that racist abuse has no place in Irish society and the IRFU has a zero tolerance policy towards racism of any form,” the statement added.

Ireland return to Six Nations action this weekend against England at Twickenham.
