Playing junior provincial rugby for the Limpopo province, Breet went on to make the South African high performance team in 2009. Signing with the Bulls in 2010, the lock forward would go on to represent the Bulls at U19, U21 and Vodacom Cup level. 2013 saw JJ signing with the Lions, where the forward got his first taste of Currie Cup rugby and helped the franchise achieve Super Rugby status for 2014.
